6 Ways To Kickstart Your Creativity

audra koch

All creative types will know that there are times you seem to be exploding with ideas and creating like there’s no tomorrow, but there are other times when you can’t seem to think of a single thing, or everything you do just doesn’t feel right.

So for anyone who may be stuck in a creative rut, here are 6 proven ways to kickstart that creativity back into gear:

6 ways to kickstart your creativity

BOOTS / JEANS / TOP / HEADBAND / EARRINGS

Change Your Scenery | The easiest way to get out of  rut is to just change your space! Whether that’s taking a walk around the park, or working from a coffee shop or co-working space instead of your home. Switching up your surroundings can do so much to spark both creativity and productivity.

Take a Breather | Sometimes we can put too much pressure on ourselves in the moment, so just take a short break. Write in a journal, take a walk, draw / paint / color something without aim. (I love this Color Me Stress Free book) Taking ten or fifteen minutes to do something relaxing but still creative may spark inspiration!

6 ways to kickstart your creativity

Collaborate With Others | Find someone in your field, or a similar one, and work together on a creative project! Their point of view will enhance your own, and make you see things through a different lens. Collaborating with other creatives is in my opinion, the best way to reinvigorate and push yourself to be the best you can be!

Sweat a Little | Exercise gets your blood flowing, and releases endorphins and adrenaline that may push you out of a creative rut! If you’re not into a hardcore workout, try some gentle yoga or meditation.

6 ways to kickstart your creativity

Unplug From the Internet | This can be such a difficult thing to do, especially if you’re a blogger/influencer whose job literally IS the internet. But take even a few hours, or one day and just create or search for inspiration without using a screen! Unplug all the tech, and lose yourself in books, art, museums, nature, anything that inspires you!

Make a List | Maybe more for the type-A people out there, but make a list of different ideas you have for projects, and then keep adding to it! Go back and add details to those ideas, keep thinking, keep writing whatever pops into your head, and you’ll end up with a full page of amazing ideas to explore and develop! The key is to write down everything, no idea is bad, just keep going!

How to Balance a Crazy Schedule

How to Balance a Crazy Schedule

If there's one thing I can say I'm an expert on, it's managing an insane schedule. At one point, I was taking 20 credit hours of class, working an internship 3 days a week, working a retail job 3 days a week, and keeping up with SNY! AND managed to make a 3.9 GPA that semester! I have since calmed down a little bit, but here's some of the ways I use to balance an insane schedule:

4 Summer Commuter Essentials

4 SUMMER COMMUTER ESSENTIALS.jpg

There's nothing quite like being jammed on a crowded subway car with broken AC at 9 AM in the 95 degree, 90% humidity heat of summer. New York is SO glamorous. Well to help get throguh the opressive heat, and stay cool, comfy, and pulled together, I have a few tricks:

1. Heatwave Bag

I keep a pink Glossier pouch full of essentials in my bag so that no matter the temp, there's always a quick fix. Best things to fill it with: Mini deoderant, this face mist, q-tips with pre-soaked makeup remover for any smudged makeup, oil blotting sheets, and your fave perfume in a rollerball!

2. Comfy Commute Shoes

Even if your job requires a heel or formal shoe, there's no reason to be uncomfortable on your commute! Grab a solid pair of cute sneakers (these are my faves) and run all over town without killing your ankles!

3. Big Sunglasses

There's so many reasons for this one...Summer sun shining in your eyes, trying to fall asleep on the subway, people watching on the subway, etc. Grab a pair of the biggest sunnies you can find!

4. Primer + Mist

This duo has been my SAVIOR through this summer heat! Pop on the primer before any makeup (or just alone!) for SPF + oil control + protection against city air pollution, and then finish at the very end with Chill setting spray to keep your makeup cool and in-place all day!

Guide to Long Haul Flights

IMG_2920.JPG

I'm definitely no stranger to flying. Between shuttling back and forth between Texas and New York, to my time studying abroad, hopping on flights every weekend, I've learned a thing or two about planes. Whether your flight is 2 hours or 12 hours, here are a few tips to make it a breeze:

IMG_5775.JPG

What to Wear

I always say it's best to strike a balance between being comfortable, and not looking like a you just rolled out of bed (please people, stop wearing pajamas in airports) Most of the time, I opt for thick leggings, a soft t-shirt. Then, add a layering piece, like a chambray button down (because planes can get COLD!) Cute sneakers like these are perfect, and I ALWAYS bring a blanket scarf, because it's chic off the plane, and during the flight it can be a blanket or pillow!

What to Do

Whether the flight is 4 hours or 14 hours, you'll need something to do (especially if you're me and can't sleep at all on planes!) I usually bring a book or two, and download some podcasts, though I'm more of a movie girl on planes!

A lot of blog posts say to 'catch up on work' or 'tackle that inbox' while you're on a flight, but I'm of the notion that flights are a great chance to unplug, get into a good book, or lay back and listen to your favorite music and relax!

Beauty Essentials

Another tip: do not wear makeup on planes. period. The dry cabin air is already bad enough, so go bare-faced and bring a moisturizer with you! If you have activities post-flight, bring your makeup bag on with a few multi-taskers, and do your makeup in the last hour of the flight.

You all know I love Glossier (and I'm a Rep!) so for the perfect 5-minute plane touch-up, I would grab Priming Moisturizer to start, pop a little Stretch Concealer where needed, swipe the lip color Crush across lips and cheeks (Leo also works as a contour on fairer skin!) and then a quick coat of mascara (loving this one) has you looking fresh for disembarkment!

8 Things I Want To Do In 2018

8 Things I Want To Do In 2018

We're only 4 days in to 2018, but so far, it's been pretty great! I've never been one to make hard-and-fast New Years Resolutions, but this year I thought I'd take a stab at a few goals, or just little things I want to do in 2018. I'll be printing these out in pretty fonts and putting them above my desk in my new Brooklyn apartment (don't worry, I'll post pictures once it's finished!) so that I can be constantly reminded of them!

5 Reasons To Make Blogger Friends

I'm so lucky that NYC is filled with tons of amazing bloggers, and I've met some amazing girls while blogging in New York! All of the girls I've met create amazing content and are such nice, genuine, and inspiring people!

My first blogger friends, Hillary and Tatum, I met at a blogging event in September 2016, and after MANY brunches, coffees, events, and exploding champagne bottles on Instagram Live, these blogging friends have become real-life friends! Even better, my blogging circle keeps growing by meeting and getting to know new girls!

April Goals

April Goals

Recently I've been getting requests for more personal/lifestyle/etc type posts, so I'm adding a new little monthly post here on SNY! Every month I'' write a few small goals I have for myself, and at the end of the month, I'll add on an update to see whether I accomplished what I wanted to! I thought it would be a good way to keep y'all in the loop of my life (and fun for me to look back on later!)
